Marian Clennon requests recount in Austin mayoral race (updated)

“If the people truly were that against me and didn’t voice it, then I guess (my political career) is pretty done anyway,” she said. “But if something was wrong with the outcome and their votes aren’t being registered the way they intended, then I have everything to gain. Really, I have absolutely nothing to lose.”

Last Thursday when Johnson said Clennon initially inquired about a recount, Clennon refused to comment, saying she had not considered a recount at that point.

Mayor Tom Stiehm said he isn’t very concerned about the pending results of the recount.

“If there’s a 1,700 vote (error), we need to scrap our whole system and start over again,” Stiehm said. “There’s not going to be 1,700, I can just about assure you of that.”

Regarding Clennon’s motivation to request the recount, Stiehm said, “She put a lot of effort and a lot of thought into (her campaign). It’s a little tough for her to accept the defeat.”

Clennon said she simply wants a recount to give her some peace of mind, and if the results are the same she will accept the outcome.

“If nothing changes at the end, I’m okay with that,” Clennon said. “I’m just a little old fashioned. When you hand count things, then you know 100 percent.”

The recount is scheduled for Thurs., Nov. 11 at 8:30 a.m., and could cost Clennon upwards of $1,000. The out-of-pocket expenses pay for one city staff member, one county staff member and around nine election judges to conduct the recount.

Johnson said she is hoping to recruit nine election judges to save time and money, whereas fewer judges would lengthen the process and likely end up costing Clennon more money.

Officials scheduled the recount for Thursday as city and county government employees have a day off for Veterans Day. Employees will be available to conduct the recount on that day since it cannot happen during regular business hours.

Clennon was hoping the counting would commence on Saturday so she wouldn’t have to take off work. She said now she will have to find three people who can also take off work to represent her campaign and oversee the recount.

“I hope people understand what kind of roadblocks are being continuously thrown at me with this,” Clennon said. “If they were confident in their numbers I wouldn’t have these kinds of roadblocks.”
