Austin girls hockey team wins first game

The Austin girls hockey team won its first game of the season by a score of 4-2 over Litchfield (1-3 overall) in the Willmar Invite Friday.

The Packers (1-3 overall) took the lead for good in the third period when Abby Gallaher scored on a power play and Alex Larson made it a two-goal game with 6:50 left in the contest.

Austin racked up 41 shots on goal.

“We skated hard and we dominated the puck. Our defense did a good job of clearing it,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “We had a lot of scoring opportunities where we just couldn’t hit the back of the net, but we’ve got our hockey legs back.”

Seventh grader Allison Hoban got the start in net for Austin and she made 15 saves while picking up a win in her varsity debut.

“She did a great job,” Bray said.
