Robert D. Hartnell, 83, of Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

Robert was born March 17, 1927 in Stacyville, Iowa to Fred and Bertha (Mauer) Hartnell. He graduated from Visitation High School. On June 17, 1950 he was united in marriage to Arlene Simon in Stacyville. Robert was a Navy veteran and a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trap shooting and farming, his lawn, gardening, reading and wintering in Arizona. His greatest accomplishment was being a self-taught commodities broker. Robert’s family time and gatherings were top priority.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, Austin; children: Shari Bothun (Anthony Panzica), Sun Prairie, WI; Vicky Braaten (Bob Otterson), Austin; Mary Fitch, Delevan, WI; Carol (Dan) Fredenberg, Glendale, AZ; six grandchildren: Aric Bothun, Lexington, KY; Jason Bothun, Edgerton, WI; Scott Braaten, Austin; Stacy (Braaten) Hastings, San Diego, CA; Cassandra Hibbard, Milwaukee, WI; Corey Fredenberg, Fort Collins, CO; nine great-grandchildren: Zackary Bothun, Edgerton, WI; Alana and Colton Braaten, Austin; Allyn, Lyric, Kian and Judah Hastings, San Diego, CA; Trey and Beckett Fredenberg, Fort Collins, CO; and sister, Beverly (Richard) Ashton, Austin.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Bertha Hartnell; aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #146.
