An Austin man who allegedly choked a woman and threatened to kill both her and himself is set to have his first court appearance Thursday, Oct. 28.

Olayi Oman Oman, 32, faces charges of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, felony terroristic threats, felony domestic assault by strangulation, gross misdemeanor carrying a pistol without a permit and gross misdemeanor interfering with a 911 call.

On Oct. 19, Oman and the woman had an argument during which Oman allegedly told her, “I am so mad I could beat you.”

Oman then allegedly took a 9 mm pistol out of his pants and put bullets in it. The court complaint said Oman gave the woman a cell phone, told her to call the cops and said he was going to kill her, the cops and himself.

When the woman began calling the police, Oman allegedly took the phone away from her and threw it at the wall.

The woman told officers that Oman kicked her in the leg, pushed her into the floor and choked her with both hands. Officers observed bruising and scratches on her neck and reported that she was coughing and having difficulty swallowing, according to court documents.

The woman also told officers Oman choked her three times, “jumped” on her face, picked her up by the neck, bent her fingers back and bit her thumb.

The woman was taken to Austin Medical Center by police and a physician classified her injuries as “bodily harm.”

When police spoke with Oman, he said the woman grabbed him by the neck during the argument. Officers observed a small cut on his neck.

The court complaint said Oman told police that during the argument the woman said, “one of us will be dead,” at which point he put the gun in his pants so she would not use it.

Oman is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, Oct. 28, with Judge Daniel Kammeyer presiding.
