The Austin girls tennis team was on the mark in its season opener against Faribault as it swept all seven matches in a 7-0 win over the Falcons at Paulson Courts Tuesday.

Austin’s No. 2 singles player Nina Carney showed some resolve in her win as she won the first set 6-1, but trailed 5-3 in the second set against Jenna Boudrea.

“I just started getting a little tired and I was hitting weaker,” said Carney, a senior. “I got less confident in myself and I let that get to me.”

With the prospect of a possible third set in front of her, Carney turned it around and tallied the next four points without making any mistakes. Her placement was spot on as she took over.

“I just started kicking butt,” Carney said. “I hate being the last one on the court and I just wanted to finish it off.”

No. 4 singles player Ashley Flaherty and the No. 1 doubles team of Mary Kate Barinka and Emily Sundal were perfect for the Packers (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine), winning 6-0, 6-0.
