Man flees on foot, arrested for tampering with vehicles

A man was arrested around 3:30 a.m. early Friday morning for tampering with motor vehicles in the 800 block of 5th Ave. NE.

Omar Rangel, 27, was allegedly going through an Austin resident’s vehicle that was parked in the driveway of his residence when the resident confronted Rangel. According to Police Chief Brian Krueger, Rangel took off on foot down the block, but the witness grabbed him and brought him back to the residence to notify police of the incident.

Upon arrival, police discovered that Rangel had gone through another vehicle in the area.

Rangel is being held at the Mower County jail pending his court appearance. He is being charged with misdemeanor tampering with motor vehicles. Krueger said the county and city attorney will be reviewing the case to confirm the charge.

Rangel does not have a permanent address.
