HAYFIELD — The Viking volleyball team regained its focus after letting a tight game-three slip away in a four game win over Austin in Hayfield Monday.
The Vikings (8-2 overall) finished with a 25-15, 25-13, 24-26, 25-14 win.
The Packers took game four when Jenna Svoboda and Haley Underwood came up with back-to-back kills to break a 24-24 tie.
“I think we just gave up a little bit (in game three). We thought we had it and we stopped talking. We’re usually not like that,” said Hayfield setter Molly Streightiff, who had 13 set assists and seven kills. “We’re glad to beat a bigger school and we appreciate every win, so we’ll take it.”
Hayfield rebounded in the second game by jumping out to a 19-11 lead after a kill by Liz Ristau and Jaide Ryks served the last seven points of the game, including back-to-back aces.
The Packers (2-11 overall) started the first game strong as they led 10-8 early, but Hayfield’s Katie Miner served six straight points to make it 15-10 and the Vikings scored 15 of the last 20 points in the first game.
“We had some communication and non-aggressive errors, but when we came together and played, we played a good game and we rallied in game three,” Austin head coach Darica Schneider said.
Hayfield jumped out to a big lead early in the second game as their front line took over. Ristau finished with eight kills for Hayfield, while Abby Blanchard had 14 kills.
“We weren’t really worried about (the battle up front.) We were mostly worried with their off-speed stuff,” Ristau said.
