Greyhounds rally falls short vs. Rochester

Despite a strong rally, the Austin Greyhounds came up just short, 4-3, in their double-elimination tournament game against the Rochester Royals Sunday at Marcusen Park.

The Royals were already up 4-0 when Greyhounds left fielder Bryan Toov snagged what had looked like a sure three-run homer off the bat of the Royals’ Chuck Krom in the top of the fifth inning.

Riding that momentum, the Greyhounds put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, then added another in the sixth off a John Kirby single.

Kirby, who was three for four on the night, doubled to lead off the ninth, and raced to third on a bunt.

In the ensuing play at the plate, a cloud of dust obscured the action — but when the air cleared, Kirby was out and the Hounds were out of chances.

The Hounds play again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Riverland complex, when they host the Waseca Braves.
