Hayfield Heat top Pine Island

The Hayfield Heat defeated the Pine Island Pioneers 8-2 in soggy conditions Saturday in Hayfield.

The Heat got on the scoreboard first with one run in the second inning. Cooper Nelson drew a lead off walk, and after the next two batters got out, stole second base. Mark Evjen then came through with a two-out hit to score the first run of the game.

The Heat (5-1 overall) tacked on two more runs in the third inning when Shawn Palmer led off with a single, which was followed by a Travis Kauffman double, and then a Cooper Nelson single.

The score stayed the same until the seventh inning when in the top half Pine Island scored one run, but Hayfield answered with their biggest inning of the day scoring three runs. It started with a Tyler Krekling lead off walk. After an out, Shawn Palmer walked, and Travis Kauffman delivered a two-run double to right-center. After the second out was recorded, Kauffman scored on a single by Josh Toquam.
