Fire destroys garage in southeast Austin

A fire in southeast Austin Thursday afternoon destroyed a two-car garage but injured no one.

The cause of the fire, which started at around 12:30 p.m. at 1220 Fourth Ave. SE, is still under investigation, Austin Fire Department Commander Brian Lovik said.

That residence belongs to Tim and Barb Trimble. Barb Trimble was home at the time of the fire, along with two sons. Her younger son, 11, had parked his bicycle in the garage about 10 minutes before he noticed smoke billowing, according to a police report. The family then called 911 and moved a vehicle away from the garage area before the fire picked up.

Lovik said he’s not sure if anything inside the garage can be salvaged, as the fire did completely engulf the structure. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within about 25 minutes.

Property losses include a Honda moped, three sets of golf clubs and a number of tools. An exact dollar amount of the damage has not been determined.

The garage was detached from the Trimble’s home, which was not damaged. Other properties in the area also avoided damage.

Lovik said the state’s fire marshal office will be investigating the cause of the fire.
