The Austin softball team dropped a pair of pitcher’s duels 1-0 and 3-1 at Winona Thursday.

In the opener, Winona (9-5 overall, 8-3 Big Nine) scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Amanda Drazkowski singled, advanced to third on an errant throw and scored on a wild pitch.

Austin (3-10 overall, 2-8 Big Nine) had runners in scoring position in the second, fifth and sixth innings but Winona’s Makala Hanson kept them in check by striking out 15 while allowing five hits and walking none.

“Their pitcher had a real nice rise ball and it threw our hitters off,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said.

Austin mustered just two hits in the second game against Winona’s Erin Buswell, but the Packers did make some solid contact.

“We really hit the ball in that game, it was just all line drives and pop ups hit right at them,” Strauss said.

Marie Clennon pitched a total of 12 innings on Thursday and she allowed zero earned runs while striking out seven.

“Marie pitched really well,” Strauss said.
