BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The Awesome Blossoms didn’t have any trouble in the opening round of the Subsection 1A softball tournament when they topped No. 8 Medford 17-0 in five innings in BP Tuesday.

Junior shortstop Tayla Jones got top-seeded Blooming Prairie (19-2 overall) kickstarted when she launched a three-run double into left field in the second inning and she bashed an RBI-triple and scored on a throwing error to make it 9-0 in the third inning.

“It’s a good way to start of the tournament,” said Jones, who was 3-for-3. “Playing at home is a lot better (than a neutral site) because we’re all used to it.”

BP (19-2 overall) took over in the third inning when it scored 10 times to make it 14-0.

“I wanted to make sure we started hitting right when the tournament started and we did a good job of that,” BP head coach Ali Mach said.

On the mound, BP junior Erica Manske struck out 13 as just two Medford hitters made contact against her. Chelsea Morgan had the only hit for the Tigers (3-16 overall) with a first inning single.

“We played good and hopefully it keeps getting better from here,” Manske said. “It was a good start and the run support definitely helps.”

BP will face No. 5 seeded Hayfield in another elimination game Thursday at 5 p.m. in BP. The Vikings beat No. 4 seed Kenyon/Wanamingo 7-1 to move on.

“We’re going to have to improve for the next game,” Mach said. “We didn’t make all the right decisions and there were some miscues on signals and certain plays we had put on. We’re on the right track and we just have to keep pushing and improving every game.”

BP has now won 17 straight games and two of those wins were against Hayfield.

“We’re going to practice hard, play defense and if we get the bats going again, hopefully we’ll come up with a win (on Thursday),” Jones said.
