The funds were raised during Austin High School’s Mr. Austin pageant last month.

Proceeds from this year’s show will go toward relief efforts in Haiti through the Mower County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

“In the past, we have given the money to the Humane Society, but this year we thought we should donate it to Haiti,” Gunderson said.

Youth Leadership aimed to raise at least $1,000, and almost doubled their goal.

The local chapter of the Red Cross forwards 100 percent of all donations specified for Haiti directly to the international relief fund.

Brigitte Campbell, executive assistant of the American Red Cross Mower County Chapter, said that many area schools and organizations have brought in donations for Haiti.

The Mr. Austin pageant was sponsored by AHS Youth Leadership and Chemical Health Awareness Initiative (CHAI).
