Kevin M. Sass, 88 of Austin died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Austin Medical Center.
Kevin Murray Sass was born Nov. 13, 1921 in Portland, Ore. to George and Mary (Tynan) Sass. He spent his early years in the Oregon and Washington area. Orphaned at age 12, Kevin came alone on the train to Adams, Minn. to live with an aunt and uncle. He graduated from Adams High School, class of 1939. Kevin spent his entire working career of 42 and a half years, including 3 and a half years in the Army during WWII, in the Hormel Corporation offices, retiring in 1982 as a computer programmer.
Kevin lost his first wife Lorraine to cancer. He later met Joanne Upcraft in the Hormel office. They were married in 1958 and had two children, Donn and Karen. Earlier on, Kevin was active at the Westminster Presbyterian Church; he enjoyed volunteering, driving patients to medical appointments and delivering Meals on Wheels. Kevin loved reading, camping and traveling, especially spending winter down south following retirement. He enjoyed visits with grandchildren and loved all animals, especially dogs and a pet cat, Suzie. Recently, he missed having breakfasts with the “Hormel guys.”
Kevin is survived by his wife Joanne of Austin; daughter, Karen (Terry) Poncelet, Mazeppa, Minn.; grandchildren, Kevin, Cory, Colten, Tara and Tessa; nieces and nephews, Kathi and Mike Upcraft, Jane Justice, Sheila Ondich.
He was preceded in death by a stillborn son; his first wife, Lorraine; son, Donn; and a brother, Dick.
Kevin was a very good person, a bright man who was much-loved and will be much-missed. God bless his memory. Godspeed Kevin!
A private memorial service will be held with the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
The family prefers memorials to Parkinson ’s disease research, the Mower County Humane Society or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
