ROCHESTER — The LeRoy/Ostrander girls basketball team hit a scoring slump at the worst time in a 46-33 loss to Rushford/Peterson in the Subsection 1A East semifinals at the Rochester Civic Center Auditorium Tuesday.

The No. 3 seeded Cardinals (22-5 overall) had more turnovers (nine) than field goal attempts (two) in the game’s first seven minutes as No. 2 Rushford/Peterson (13-10 overall) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after Jade Pelzl, who scored 20 points, hit a three with 10:39 left in the half.

R/P forced 19 L/O turnovers on the night.

“We knew we what they were going to do and I wouldn’t have expected us having as much trouble with the press as we did,” L/O head coach Aaron Hungerholt said.

The Cardinals closed the gap to 12-9 after Krista Bunne hit back-to-back threes and Kaylee Bunne scored on a breakaway to make it 16-14 with 1:42 left in the half, but that’s as close as it would get.

“For as bad as we started, we attacked the basket and then good things started to happen,” Hungerholt said. “They were keying a lot on our three seniors and (Krista) stepped up for a little while. We couldn’t get over the hump and we dug ourselves in to deep of a hole.”

R/P opened the second half on a 16-2 run that saw Pelzl and Kenzie Lind knock down back-to-back threes.

“I think the intensity was there, but it got away from us in the second half,” Hungerholt said. “They’ve got good shooters and they were scrappy on defense. The ball didn’t bounce our way.”

The Trojans contained all three of L/O’s senior 1,000 point scorers — Mac Bunne, Kaylee Bunne and Rachel Rosedhal — to single digit scoring on the night. Mac Bunne had seven points and 10 rebounds and Kaylee Bunne had nine points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Hungerholt said those three seniors will be missed next season.

“They’re three great girls and you can’t put it into words. They put this program where it is and it’s our job to continue,” he said.

R/P will take on top-seeded Spring Grove in the Subsection 1A East finals Friday at 6 p.m.
