HAYFIELD — The only suspense in Hayfield gym Friday night was when their center would reach a scoring milestone.

And it took a little longer than expected.

Kiley Severson, a senior center, finally hit the 1,000-point mark for her career with 9:55 left of a 55-17 win by Hayfield over Pine Island.

Severson needed 13 points coming into the game, but after scoring her 11th point with 8:59 left in the first half, she faced a constant double team from the Panthers and she missed her next seven field goal attempts, while hitting one of two free throws.

“I was very nervous before the game and after the half I was even more nervous to get the last two,” Severson said. “It was super stressful and I didn’t think I was ever going to get one to fall, but it came.”

Severson, who finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, reached the milestone on a short jumper on a feed from Renee Stier, who had five points and three assists.

Stier was one of three Vikings to have three assists as Kayla Garness and Molly Streightiff also notched that total in an effort to feed Severson.

“They knew she was close and they wanted to get her the ball,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “Kayla Garness gave up a lay-up to get it to Kiley on one play. That’s just the way these girls are.”

Severson was flattered that her teammates did what they could to get her looks.

“Some of those passes were not needed and they could’ve taken the shot, but it’s nice,” she said.

As for the game itself, the Vikings (3-0 overall, 2-0 HVL) jumped out to a 33-2 lead at the break after they held Pine Island (0-4 overall) scoreless for the last 15 minutes of the first half. Hayfield forced 23 Pine Island turnovers in the first half and 38 on the night.

“I thought our defense looked as sharp as it has looked all year. We rotated well and we covered things well,” Kindschy said.

Senior Jordyn Krekling had 13 points and four steals for the Vikings.
