Shirley Gunderson

Shirley Marie Gunderson, 86, of Austin, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 22, 2009 at Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Hayfield.  

She was born April 22, 1923 to George and Helen (Hogan) Dastyck in Austin, Minn. where she grew up, graduating from Austin High School in 1941. She worked at Sears and Montgomery Wards and married Louis Gunderson on April 21, 1943 in Austin. Shirley quit working outside the home when the children were born. After they were older, she worked at area nursing homes. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, she liked bowling, playing cards and dancing. Shirley was always interested in social activities Shirley and Louis wintered in Tucson, Ariz. for 22 years. Louis passed away on Sept. 19, 2006.

Survivors include her son, Rodney (Elaine) Gunderson of Connelsville, Penn.; daughters, Cheryl (Michael) Mestad of Hayfield; Lori Young of Kasson; nine grandchildren, Kari, Keith, Jenny, Kirk, Aaron, Lindsay, Bryce, Kelsey and Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; Greyson, Drew, Maddy, Paige, Lilli, Tracie, McKenna; three step-grandchildren, R.C., Matt and Lindsay; two step-great-grandchildren, Damon and Zane; two brothers, George (Mary) Dastyck of Tucson, Ariz.; Richard (Jessica) Dastyck of Oak, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements. The family prefers memorials to St. Olaf Lutheran Church or Field Crest Care Center.
