Mary Finch

Mary Annetta (McMurray) Finch,91, of Austin died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 18, 2009 at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa where she had been a resident since late August. 

She was born Sept. 29, 1918 to William S. and Gertrude M. (Long) McMurray in Lincoln, Neb. where she grew up. After graduating from Lincoln High School, Mary attended the University of Nebraska where she met and married Harold Finch. Upon his graduation in 1938, they moved with their small daughter to Austin where Harold was employed by Geo. A. Hormel & Company. A lifelong homemaker, Mary was an active volunteer in the community.

Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Harold; two daughters, Georgia (Norman) Hanevik of St. Paul, Anne (Charles) Helgeland of Franklin, Tenn.; one son, John Finch of Sante Fe, N.M.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one great-great-great-grandchild; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 13 siblings and one infant son.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 at First Congregational UCC with Pastor George Toschak officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment of ashes will be at a later date in Lincoln, Neb.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Salvation Army.
