Be a ‘Santa’s Helper’ this year

The Austin Jaycees want residents to be “Santa’s Helpers” this holiday season in an effort to get gifts for kids in need.

Local bars are selling the Santa’s Helpers cards now through Dec. 10. For $1, Austin residents can help the Jaycees buy gifts for kids with help from the Parenting Resource Center’s Crisis Nursery and the Salvation Army.

Last year, the Jaycees raised more than $3,500, which was enough to get toys and clothes for more than 30 kids.

This year, Jaycees chairwoman Danielle Nesvold said the goal is to top $4,000 and to help 40 kids.

There’s something in it for the bars as well — the location that sells the most cards wins the coveted Santa trophy.

Margaritaville, Mickey’s, Bobee Jo’s, the Windrift, Lefty’s and the Hiawatha will be battling for the prize.

“They really get into it,” Nesvold said.

If the $4,000 goal is met, Nesvold said it will be great timing for a successful fundraiser given the state of the economy.

“This year (the gifts) will probably be more in demand,” she said.

To accommodate the demand, Nesvold said the Jaycees would love to increase membership.

She added that the group does a lot of good for the community.

“We really enjoy doing things that focus on kids,” Nesvold said.
