LEROY — It took a little time, but the LeRoy/Ostrander volleyball team got over losing the SEC crown last week.

In fact, they found a way to use it to their advantage as they jumped out to a 25-16, 25-4, 25-12 over Lanesboro in a Subsection 1A tournament match in LeRoy Thursday.

“(The loss to Mabel/Canton last week) was kind of a motivator for us to play better,” said L/O setter Mac Bunne, who had 28 set assists and four aces Thursday. “Now we know we have to play our best every game.”

The Cardinals (26-4 overall) didn’t get off to their best start when they led just 17-13 early in the first game. But they went on to win that one and they jumped out to a 24-2 lead in the second game after freshman Megan Grant served 12 straight points, including two of her three aces.

“It was just nerves. After we settled down, everyone got in their groove and we played pretty good,” said L/O hitter Kaylee Bunne, who had 10 kills and four ace serves.

Although the top-seeded Cards had swept the No. 9 seeded Burros (10-12 overall) earlier this season, they knew not to overlook their opponent.

“We prepared for them like we would any other good team. They’ve been playing good lately,” Mac Bunne said.

The Cards will travel to Mayo Civic Center Saturday to take on No. 4 Wabsha/Kellogg (24-5 overall) for the Subsection 1A title at noon.

“Everyone knows we have to play as hard as we can, because we don’t want our season to end,” Kaylee Bunne said. “We’re just going to play, we don’t need to worry about (seedings).”

Rachel Rosedahl had seven kills and 14 digs for L/O, Kylie Grant had 14 digs, and Chandra Riedemann had five kills.
