Grace I. Lucas, 89, of Spring Valley passed away peacefully Thursday morning, September 17, 2009 at the Spring Valley Care Center.
Grace was born September 11, 1920, in Dexter Township. She is the daughter of Ralph and Ina (Pickett) DeYoung. She grew up near Dexter and was a graduate of Elkton High School. She married Lawrence Lucas on September 14, 1939 in Austin and they farmed near Wykoff and Spring Valley until their retirement when they moved to Spring Valley. Lawrence passed away in 1997. Grace was a homemaker and worked at the Spring Valley Hospital and the Spring Valley Care Center.
Grace was a member of the Wykoff United Methodist Church since 1939 and was active as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was also a member of their Ladies Aid and served as a 4-H leader. She was dedicated to her family, proud of her grandchildren, and especially fond of her great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her deep faith and willingness to help others and the kindness she showed everyone.
She is survived by her children, Marguerite (Ade) Ivers of Queen Creek, AZ, Laura (Jim) Anderson-Wilson of Zumbrota, David (Darlene) Lucas of Rochester, Kathryn Lucas of Spring Valley and Barbara (Dan) Richardson of Bountiful, UT; eight grandchildren, Jason Ivers, Mike and Mark Anderson, Sheila Williams, Russell Lucas, Dan Lucas and Mike and Matt Richardson; four step-grandchildren, Jess and Chris Richardson and Michele and Matt Wilson; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; brother, Everett (Shirley) DeYoung of Austin; and sister, Dolores Gage of Milwaukee. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be 2 p.m., Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Wykoff United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Malinsky officiating. Burial will be in the Wykoff Cemetery. Friends may call at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and at the church on Sunday an hour before the service.
