The finance director for Austin Public Schools turned in her resignation Wednesday, but officials remain optimistic because of the fiscal position in which she will leave the district.
Lori Volz, who is serving her 11th year with the district, has accepted a similar position at Albert Lea Public Schools. She was hired in Austin as a financial accountant and was quickly promoted to director of finance and operations.
“From the moment she’s stepped into the position, she’s done a marvelous job,” school board chairman Don Fox said.
The district currently has a balanced budget, but is asking voters for a levy operating referendum increase Nov. 3 to offset costs of inflation not covered because of a biennium-long freeze in state funding.
Although the district faces continuing challenges, superintendent David Krenz said Austin is appealing to applicants because of its financial status.
“We’re in sound financial shape so we are attractive to candidates,” Krenz said.
Two area finance directors have applied for the position, but Krenz would not release the names. The job opening was posted online Wednesday, and applications will be taken for the next few weeks.
Volz said Thursday the new job will cut down her commute from rural Blue Earth, and allow her more time for her daughter’s activities at Blue Earth Area High School.
“It’s been a very gratifying job,” Volz said.
Her last day with the district is Oct. 17.
