The Austin girls tennis team couldn’t keep up with Rochester Century in a 7-0 loss at Paulson Courts Thursday.

The Packers (3-5 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) put up a good fight in No. 2 singles where Sophie Hebrink lost 6-3, 6-4 and No. 2 doubles where Kaitlyn Orcutt and Mary Kate Barinka lost 6-4, 6-3.

“Sophie continues to improve and played an extremely tough player today. She battled hard and fell a little short with a very strong effort,” Austin head coach Thomas Tauchnitz said. “Mary Kate and Kaitlyn had a very close match. It seemed like every game went to about 10 deuces. They battled back and forth all day but experience played a part in that match and they were battle tested.”

Tauchnitz was pleased how his squad battled against a Panthers team that is a perennial power in tennis.

“I was really excited about our effort today,” he said. “The girls played very hard against a team that was heavily favored. I like the fact that the girls really went for it.”
