LETTER: Who makes $2,500 an hour?

Published 9:34 am Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Does anybody in Austin make $2,500 per hour? … OK, quit laughing, I’m here to tell you there is. The CEO of Hormel made $5.38 million last year. At 40 hours per week, 52 weeks, that’s $2,500 per hour. My guess is you’re probably sitting down by now so I’ll continue.

The $11.40 per hour line worker doesn’t make in one year what the CEO makes in one single 10 hour day. Now I’ve heard that Postville, Iowa is in “shambles” because their plant was “raided” due to the overwhelming amount of “illegal” labor being abused at that plant. Could people be so naive to overlook the real reason those “raids” happened? The CEOs can’t make “enough,” they don’t comprehend what “enough” is.

The (Hormel) men made $15 per hour in 1985. To match that with what things cost today it would need to be $45 per hour. Even at $25 per hour it would do wonders for our economy, a man could support his family, moms could stay home for their kids instead of “having” to go to work to make ends meet. O.K … it’s time to get up. Speak up people, our “unity” makes us strong enough to “be” the difference. Politicians can’t hear our “kitchen table” conversations. The “silence” is making me crazy. God bless America, and especially those with the guts to stand up for what’s right, more importantly to stand up against what is so clearly wrong.
