Man reportedly struck by hammer

An Austin man was injured when struck by a claw hammer, during an argument at a northwest Austin residence early Sunday morning.

According to an Austin Police Department report, the 28 year old was taken to the Austin Medical Center – Mayo Health System hospital emergency room near 2:35 a.m. Sunday, where he was treated for head wounds sustained in an attack at 901 Second Avenue Northwest Apartment No. 1.

A companion of the man told an investigating officer at the hospital emergency room the 28 year old and another man were involved in a verbal argument at the Second Avenue Northwest apartment.

The 28 year old was taken to the hospital by private parties at the party, while the other man reportedly fled the scene with the hammer.

The alleged assailant was later arrested at 511 Ninth Street Northeast residence and taken into custody.

According to the police report, he faces second degree assault charges with a deadly weapon, when he appears in Mower County District Court.

The police report indicated the victim suffered wounds to his head and back in the altercation.

The 28-year old told an investigator he remembered being struck four times by the hammer.

He was treated and released Sunday morning from the hospital emergency room.

The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
