Elsie Flaherty, 93
Elsie Flaherty, 93, of Austin, died on April 22, 2009 at Austin Medical Center. She was born May 18, 1915 to William and Katherine (Heckenliable) Weikum in Virgil, S.D. where she grew up and graduated, valedictorian, from high school in 1934. She married Leslie Flaherty on Feb. 26, 1938 in Osage, Iowa. They made their home in Austin and in 1946 moved to a farm east of Austin where they raised five children. Elsie worked with Leslie on the farm and loved gardening. Members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Elsie enjoyed playing cards and reading. Elsie was a member of the Cedars Kitchen Band.  Leslie passed away in 1994. Elsie moved to the Pickett Place in 2001 where she resided until the time of her death.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Fred) Ware, Maylene, Ala.; Paulette Carew, Austin; two sons, Leslie (Barbara) Flaherty, Oshkosh, Wis.; Daniel Flaherty, Austin; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Christina Kelch, Austin; Marie Roberts, Medford, Ore.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Laverne Strey, Bird Island; sister-in-law, Blanch LaBlanc, Seattle, Wash.; son-in-law, James Seufert, Brooklyn Park; brother-in-law, Gerry Hanson, Shadow Hills, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leslie; daughter, Jeanne Seufert; five brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Memorials are preferred to donors choice.
