The Austin softball team had a tough start in a 5-0 loss at Mankato West Thursday.

The Packers (2-3 overall, 2-3 Big Nine) committed three errors in the opening frame, which saw the Scarlets score all five of their runs.

Offensively, the Packers didn’t get a hit as West’s Ashley Goetti allowed just two walks and struck out 10.

Marie Clennon went six innings for Austin, allowing five hits, two walks and two earned runs, while striking out one.

“After the first inning we really settled down and Marie Clennon really moved the ball around,” Austin head coach Steve Knox said.

The Austin defense turned two double plays that ended West rallies in the later innings.
