Riverland softball team drops three at Irish Dome

The Riverland softball team scored just twice in three losses at the Minnesota Classic in the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn. Wednesday.

The Blue Devils lost to Rainy River 5-2, fell to St. Thomas JV 8-0 and lost to Itasca 3-0.

“What a contrast of a day,” RCC head coach Dave Lillemon said. “After scoring 51 runs (against Mesabi) Monday, we saw some really good pitching today and I was glad to see that. That will make us work harder to get better for the conference season.”

While she took home two losses, Riverland’s ace Kaylee Newmann had a good day as she allowed just two earned runs and struck out 13 in 13 innings of work — she started against Rainy River and Itasca.

“Kaylee was really sharp today and she was throwing strikes,” Lillemon said.

The toughest loss for RCC (3-3 overall) was the 3-0 loss to Itasca. The Blue Devils allowed three unearned runs in the first inning on three errors and couldn’t get back in the game.

In the 5-2 loss to Rainy River, RCC led 2-1 going into the fifth, but a two-out error helped Rainy River score four runs in the fifth to put it away.

Liz Triplett of Northfield pitched the 8-0 loss to St. Thomas JV.

“She hasn’t pitched since seventh grade so it was good to get here out there. We’re trying to develop her as our third pitcher,” Lillemon said.

Laura Meyer of Washburn had four hits on the day for the Blue Devils.

RCC’s No. 2 pitcher Anna Breault of Houston sat out with a sprained ankle.
