Dale N. Ersland, 63
Dale Norman Ersland, 63, of Austin died at the Austin Medical Center on Jan. 18, 2009.
He was born April 26, 1945 to Norman and Ethel (Greseth) Ersland in Red Wing, Minn. The family made their home in Kenyon, M inn. where Dale grew up and graduated from high school in 1963. He married Linda Schoonover on Sept. 27, 1963. During the Vietnam Conflict Dale served in the U.S. Navy as an airplane mechanic on the USS Oriskany. He was cited for courage shown during a fire on the Oriskany. He attended the University of Minnesota for two years and then the Minnesota School of Barbering. He barbered in Anoka, Kenyon and Rochester. In 1975 he opened The Barber’s Hairstyling for Men and Women in Austin. He operated the shop for 30 years.
Linda passed away on May 26, 1986. He married Theresa (Hicks) Becker on Jan. 26, 1991 in Austin. In 2001 Dale opened The Brownsdale Barbershop. He loved spending time with his family and his dog Buddy. He enjoyed gardening, fishing with grandchildren, playing 500, Acey Deucey and studying the Bible. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, American Legion in Austin and a life member of the VFW in Kenyon.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Becker-Ersland, Austin; daughters, Edwina (Eric) Harder, Austin, Mali (Joseph) Ciola, Austin, Alison (Ryan) Schultz, Rochester; grandchildren, Katelyn and Elizabeth Harder, Alexander and Anthony Ciola, Grace and Ruby Schultz; stepchildren, Jill (Russell) Lucas, Dodge Center, Anthony Becker, Elgin, Michelle (Chad Anderson) Becker, New Ulm; grandchildren, Garrett and Megan Lucas, Andrew and Alexis Becker, Cole Anderson; brothers, Donald (Anne) Ersland, Lyle, David (Carol) Ersland, Wagner, S.D., Bob (Kathy) Ersland, Kenyon; sisters, Lois (Earl) Stumpf, Red Wing, Joan (Philip) Eckblad, Welch, Norma Jean “Jeannie” (Wayne) Clark, Kenyon.
He was met in heaven by his wife, Linda Ersland; parents, Ethel and Norman; and a brother, Paul.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment is at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Military rites by American Legion Post 91.
