A night’s worth of picking fights ended in an arrest late Monday night for a bar patron of the Hiawatha Bar.

Iris Barrera was arrested for felony assault after striking another patron, Monica Fairchild, with a pool ball.

According to Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp, officers arrived at the Hiawatha just before 11 p.m. Monday to find a female, Fairchild, with cuts and a male, identified as Kevin Fuerst, holding a pool cue.

Fairchild reported that Barrera, who she didn’t know, had used a pool ball to strike Fairchild and that Fuerst was using the pool cue to attempt to dislodge the ball from Barrera. Fuerst sustained a broken little finger on his right hand in the altercation.

Philipp said a bartender and other witnesses informed police that Barrera had been trying to pick fights all night and that she was asked to leave or the bartender would call the police.

Barrera allegedly began assaulting Fairchild shortly after.

Barrera and an unidentified male fled out the back of the Hiawatha, where another officer identified Barrera and told her stop. Officers inside advised she be arrested at which time Barrera began accusing officers of not reading her her rights and claiming she went to law school.

Barrera was then placed under arrest and the case is pending.
