Florence Monahan, 88, of Rochester, Minn., died on Dec. 3, 2008 at Samaritan Bethany Heights in Rochester.
Florence Severson was born on Feb. 27, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minn. She grew up in Grand Meadow, Minn. and attended Grand Meadow High School. On Feb. 17, 1937 in Grand Meadow, she was married to Keith E. Monahan. Following their marriage the couple lived in San Diego, Calif., where Mr. Monahan was employed as a welder repairing and manufacturing airplanes. At the end of World War II they returned to Minnesota and lived in Austin and Minneapolis before moving to rural Stewartville in 1968. Mr. Monahan was employed as a welder doing ship work as well as bridge construction. Mrs. Monahan was a homemaker and was also employed as a housekeeper and a daycare provider for numerous families in the Rochester area. Mr. Monahan died on on Oct. 2, 1972 and she moved to her own home in Rochester. Recently she had lived at Plummer Place in Rochester. She was a past member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. She enjoyed entertaining, cooking and baking for the holidays, fishing, garage sales and re-sales, reading, cards and games as well as time spent with friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Kenneth) Highet, Austin; two sons, Ronald (Nancy), Rochester, David (Glenda), Columbus, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville with the Reverend John Heille officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville is handling the arrangements.
