Packers settle for tie in St. Cloud

The Austin girls hockey team did a lot of things right, but had to settle for a 3-3 tie against St. Cloud Apollo in St. Cloud Friday.

The Packers (2-1-1 overall) took a 3-2 lead when Ashley Arhart scored with under five minutes left in the game, but the Icebreakers tied it up when Megan Schwegman scored on a shot from the blue line just 16 seconds after Arhart’s score.

“It should’ve been blocked at the blue line, but it got through and trickled in,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said.

The Packers had just one shot in overtime, while Apollo had three attempts.

After a scoreless first period, the Icebreakers scored twice in the second period before Catherine Wagner made it 2-1 with a goal.

“We competed very well,” Bray said. “We forechecked very well in the first period, but we kind of got away from it in the second and third period. Overall, our breakouts and passing were good and Audrey (DeVries) was stellar in the net.”

The Austin defense did a solid job as it held three of Minnesota’s top-10 scorers to no goals on the night. Austin also stopped the Icebreakers on six power plays, including one five-on-three.

“We shut them down,” Bray said.

The Packers play Sartell at 12:30 p.m. in St. Cloud.
