The Austin Fire Department responded to a rural Lansing Township home early Tuesday morning for a report of a car fire.

A 1999 Pontiac Bonneville was fully engulfed in flames when Mower County Sheriff’s deputies arrived first at the home of Robert Cook, age 56, of 26238 547th Ave. at around 3:55 a.m.

Cook reported that he went out and started the car and returned to the home for a cup of coffee. When he returned he smelled and saw smoke coming from the center console.

Cook then moved other vehicles away from the car and preceded to drive the Bonneville to the end of the driveway, away from the house in case it did start on fire.

No one was injured. The car was minimally insured.
