An intentionally set leaf pile fire prompted a reminder that open burning is not allowed in the Austin city limits.

Millie Thomas, 200 19th Street Northeast, reported a large leaf pile was ignited Saturday near 8:34 p.m.

According to an Austin Police Department report, a neighbor, Bob Mallory, reported seeing two male juveniles throw a lighted match into the pile of leaves and run away from the scene.

Austin firefighters arrived at the scene and contained the blaze from damaging nearby properties.

It is against city ordinance to conduct any open burning in the city limits.

To burn in the countryside, residents must have a burning permit issued by Mower County. Dry, windy condition s also make open burning hazardous, officials said.
