Margaret Christina (Schaefer) Whalen, 85
Margaret Christina (Schaefer) Whalen, 85, of Austin, died on Sept. 7, 2008 at her home surrounded by her family.
Margaret was born Nov. 4, 1922 in Taopi, Minn. to Joseph and Celestine Schaefer. On Aug. 9, 1944 she was united in marriage to Leslie I. Whalen at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1972. Margaret worked a short time at Hormel Foods, at Klagge’s Ice Cream Shop and she was a waitress at the Austin Moose Lodge. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, making rag rugs and a variety of crafts, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her children: Donald (Karen) Whalen, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Duane (Jeanne) Whalen, Ely, Susan (Harry) Davis, Austin, Aletha (Leo) Coyle, Austin, Kevin (Della) Whalen, LeRoy, and Michael (Saralyn) Whalen, Austin; grandchildren: Jeffrey Whalen, Kimberly Bundy, Craig Whalen, Paul Davis, Jeremy Davis, Christopher Coyle, Travis Coyle, David Whalen, Patrick Whalen, Joshua Whalen, Phillip Whalen, Ellie Quam, Mitchell Whalen and Eric Whalen; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings: Sy Schaefer, Austin, Wilfred “Bill” Schaefer, Austin, Helen (Jack) Sershen, Austin, and Bernard (Pat) Schaefer, Austin.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Pau,l in 1970; parents, Joseph and Celestine Schaefer; and siblings: Raymond Schaefer, Leo Schaefer, Dorothy Schlichter and Rosemary Danley.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The honorary casket bearers will be Kimberly Bundy, Jeremy Davis, Travis Coyle, Patrick Whalen, Joshua Whalen, Phillip Whalen, Ellie Quam and Eric Whalen. The casketbearers will be Jeffrey Whalen, Paul Davis, Christopher Coyle, David Whalen, Mitchell Whalen and Craig Whalen.
