We want to drive the Zamboni

The year was 1992.

The average cost of a gallon of gas was $1.05, Bill Clinton was president and the Mall of America, still home to Camp Snoopy at the time, opened in Bloomington.

It was also the last time the Gear Daddies performed live in Austin, making this weekend’s event even more worth attending.

The band, whose hit “Zamboni” appeared on the Mighty Ducks 2 Soundtrack and is a favorite for small-town hockey arenas, headlines a concert benefit for Marcusen Park Saturday, which kicks off at 3 p.m. Tickets are $29 in advance and $35 at the door.

The event will also feature several other local bands, including LEEP 27, Summit Avenue, Amish Playboys and Plan B.

All proceeds from the concert will benefit the local ballpark, which opened in the late 1940s.

Saturday’s concert is a rare chance for residents and visitors to enjoy good, local music, see the Gear Daddies return to their roots and help out a good cause at the same time.

We know that the price of admission may be steep for some, especially in today’s economy, but we encourage those who can go to take advantage of this once in a decade opportunity and head down to Marcusen Park Saturday.

Even if gas prices are no longer $1.05.
