Hounds fall to Royals; get rained out against Marshall

It wasn’t the best of weekends for the Greyhounds as they didn’t clinch the No. 1 seed in the Southern Minny League playoffs and they had their Fan Appreciation Day rained out.

Austin (8-18 overall, 4-2 Southern Minny) lost 18-4 to the Rochester Royals (3-1 Southern Minny) Saturday. If the Hounds had won the contest, they would’ve taken the No.1 seed for the first round of the playoffs.

Now, if Rochester beats the Austin Blue Sox Friday, the Royals will have the top seed. If the Blue Sox (2-2 Southern Minny), it’ll come down to a tiebreaker.

Rochester scored 11 runs in the first three innings and knocked out Austin starter Nick Dolan early.

On Sunday, the Hounds played mostly reserves and they were trailing Marshall 3-2 in the top of the sixth with no outs when the game was called due to heavy rains.

“It was good that we got to get some guys who don’t always play in the game and get them at-bats,” Hounds manager John Frein said.

Marshall’s Derek West had just hit an RBI double right before the rain started to give the A’s the lead. Marshall had runners on second and third with no outs when the game was called.

For Austin, Jamie Boelter allowed seven hits, two walks, and three earned runs, while striking out two in five innings.

Frein was 1-for-1 with a walk, a run, and an RBI for the Hounds, Nick Bowe had an RBI-groundout and Mike Astrup was 1-for-2 with a run.
