The Southland baseball team (19-2 overall) didn’t hold any punches in a 22-3 win over Kenyon/Wanamingo (4-14 overall) in the opening round of the 1A West Subsection at Riverland Complex Tuesday.

The Rebels fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but responded with a two-run-home run by Brian Voigt in the bottom of the second, before putting up 12 runs in the second inning to put it away.

“They got a couple hits up the middle early,” Southland pitcher Mitch Nagele said. “I just had to throw strikes and let the defense hold them down.”

The Rebels racked up 16 hits in the win. Their 22 runs were the second most they scored all season — Southland scored 25 against Lewiston/Altura April 15.

No. 1 seeded Southland will play No. 4 seeded Hayfield Thursday at 5 p.m. in Riverland.
