“Donate blood to the Red Cross and help patients in need.”

That’s the invitation from Mary Hyland, blood services coodinator for the Mower County chapter of the American Red Cross.

School is soon out for the year, and many regular blood donors are enjoying summer activities and vacations.

The need for blood, however, doesn’t take a vacation, according to Hyland.

“To ensure that patients in the area and around the nation have the blood they need, the American Red Cross is asking eligible blood donors to give a little of themselves this summer and remember to make time to donate blood,” said Hyland.

”It only takes about an hour and can make a real difference in someone’s life,” she said. “When you give blood to the Red Cross, you can change a life, starting with your own.”

How people donate blood

Simply call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (800-448-3542) or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment or for more information, Hyland advises.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parental consent form as of July 1, 2008), must weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good general health.

To make an appointment for the bloodmobiles in Austin, call the chapter office at 437-4589.
