The Austin Jaycee All-Stars finished third in the Can-Am Youth Baseball Tournament over the weekend in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

In division play, the Stars beat the Thunder Bay Continentals behind the two-hit, 16-strikeout performance of pitcher Matt Sims. John Kirby had a pair of home runs in that game.

The Jaycees then continued with wins over Hermantown and Fort Francis. In the first round of bracketed championship play, the Austin Jaycees beat Duluth and then lost to the eventual tournament champion Lake Park.

"Our pitching was outstanding," said coach Gabby Weiss. "Sims, Nathen Wagner and Mark Harber all did great on the mound, but we had a couple of bad innings in the St. Paul game."

Catherine Wagner finished tournament play as Austin's leading hitter, going .583 in the six-game weekend trip. Kirby hit .555 and Harbers batted at .428.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, the Jaycee All-Stars end season play with a doubleheader at Albert Lea.
