Richard C. Kanne, 71

Richard Clarence Kanne, 71, of rural Austin, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at his home

He was born Sept. 18, 1931, to Clarence and Minnie (Hinderer) Kanne in Waseca. He was baptized at home on Nov. 8, 1931, and confirmed March 30, 1947, at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Waterville.

He graduated from Waterville High School in 1949. On Jan. 9, 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in Minneapolis. He earned Private First Class status and was discharged at Camp Pendleton, Calif. on May 31, 1952.

On Oct. 27, 1956, he married Norma H. Ziegler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Richard drove truck for five years and was a dispatcher for 15 years at (Darrell) Armstrong Trucking. He then worked at Lee Sand and Gravel and Ulland Brothers Construction, retiring at age 62.

He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, traveling, dining out and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Kanne; sons, David Kanne (Lavaida Rocha) and Mike Kanne (Chris), all of Austin; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating.

Internment: Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Funeral Home: Worlein Funeral Home, Austin.

Memorials: To the Hospice Program at Austin Medical Center or American Cancer Society.

Phyllis I. McAlister, 69

Phyllis I. McAlister, age 69, of Austin, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the Austin Medical Center after a long battle with respiratory disease.

Phyllis was born Nov. 27, 1933, in Osage, Iowa, to Earl and Gladys (Erbe) Tubbs. She was raised in Osage and later moved to Austin after her marriage to Herbert McAlister on Aug. 21, 1951. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1977. To this union were born five children: William "Bill," Kim, Jack, Kris and Kathy. Phyllis was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons: Bill (Sandy) McAlister, Austin; Jack (Carol) McAlister, Austin; two daughters: Kris (John) Wobschall, Austin; Kathy Pike, Austin; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; brother: Charles (Barb) Tubbs, Oelwein, Iowa; sister: Joan (Bill) Kenny, Osage, Iowa; father-in-law: R.W. "Bill" McAlister, Austin; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter: Kim Ellen on April 28, 1978.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, June 11, 2003, at Crane Community Chapel with Pastor Randy Petersen officiating. Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment is in Oakwood Cemetery.

The honorary casket bearers will be Jessica Erwin, Jenna Weber and Emily McAlister. The casket bearers will be Eric McAlister, Derek Erwin, Joey Weber, Ryan McAlister, Aron McAlister and Evan McAlister.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
