Viking softball survives

The Hayfield softball team won its play-in game against USC 7-0 but lost to top-seeded Maple River by the same score Thursday at Mapleton in Sub-Section 2A East playoffs.

The Vikings will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato against an opponent to be determined.

Against USC, Hayfield got three runs in the top of the second inning to set the tone for the rest of the game.

Cassie Kraestch and Jessie DeMaria each had two hits for Hayfield, while Kraetsch went the distance in the circle. She struck out five and allowed just four hits in the win.

Maple River upped its overall record to 19-1 with a decisive 7-0 victory. Joyce DeWitz struck out 10 would-be Hayfield batters and allowed only two hits. DeMaria and Alyssa Nelson accounted for the Vikings' singles.
