The child's mother telephoned Austin Police Department for assistance. However, police officers at the scene needed the help of the Austin Fire Department and the Gold Cross Ambulance Service before the child was extricated.

The rescuers kept the child's head above water as the machine agitated clothes. The machine was turned off, the top lid removed and the agitator device pushed aside to allow enough space for the child to be removed.

The little boy was then treated and released at Austin Medical Center hospital emergency room.

Roommate is suspect

Justin Ashton, 29, returned to his home in the 700 block of 11th Street NE early Sunday to find his 25-year-old roommate hosting a party in which underage people were drinking alcohol.

Ashton attempted to break up the party, but his roommate, Oliver Graham, 25, allegedly grabbed him and threw him against the wall, causing severe injuries, according to police.

Some party-goers took Ashton to Austin Medical Center for treatment. Police were called to the AMC emergency room at 5:35 a.m. and took Ashton's statement.
