The Austin boys' and girls' track teams put in a strong showing Saturday at the Owatonna Co-ed Relays.

"It was a wonderful performance by both teams under ideal conditions," said AHS boys' track coach Tony Einertson.

For the boys, James Dammen won the pole vault, while Evan Sorenson was the runner-up in both the high jump and the 300 intermediate hurdles. David Larson finished second in the 400 meters, while Carl Bauer ran a personal-best 10:20.3 to place second in the 3200 meters. The 4×200 meter relay team won their event also, with the 4×100 coming in second, with Mark Cavanaugh running in both events.

On the girls' side, Megan Erickson was the top Austin finisher with a strong 6th place finish in the 100 meters. Sarah Loots "showed a lot of promise," in the words of AHS girls' head coach Nancy Jones, as she jumped a 29'6 in her first-ever attempt in the triple jump.

"Our freshman are showing a lot of promise," said Jones, "and they'll continue to improve and fill in the spots left open by last year's seniors."

Both teams travel to Faribault this Tuesday for their next meet.
