Hayfield and Southland split softball doubleheader

Southland totaled 26 hits in two games and split a non-conference doubleheader at Hayfield Friday.

The host Vikings won the opener, 8-5, behind the pitching of Cassie Kraetsch. Jessica Clayton and Barb Erath each went 2-for-3 for Hayfield.

Kathy Olson got the loss for Southland, pitching two innings in relief of starter Michelle Landherr.

Sarah Walerak went 4-4 at the plate to lead the Rebels (1-1) to 15 hits. Megan Schroeder, Amanda Landherr, Allison Chapek, Carrie Shawback and Alyssa O'Connell all added two hits each.

Amy Walerak pitched for the win with Olson getting four strong innings in relief. Katie Wanous took the complete-game loss for Hayfield (1-2).

Southland plays its first Three Rivers Conference game Tuesday at Dover-Eyota, and the Rebels' home-opener is Thursday against Goodhue.

Hayfield visits Kasson-Mantorville today and hosts Lake City Tuesday in Hiawatha Valley League play.
