The Housing and Redevelopment Authority of Austin (HRA) is having informational meetings about the Homestep program at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 in the HRA offices.

Julie Ackland, HRA family housing specialist, said that the programs will teach people how to take steps toward getting a mortgage and purchasing a home.

The homestep program is six classes, set to begin on March 26, which cover banking, electrical, plumbing, heating, credit repairs and financial planning. Participants also will go on a home-buying field trip.

"If people take the classes and qualify for a mortgage, they can get a second mortgage for 0 percent for 30 years," Ackland said. "It's a good program for people that want to move out of subsidized housing."

Those who cannot make the meeting but would like to participate in the program or those who have any questions regarding the program, can call Ackland at 433-1866.

The HRA offices are located at 308 Second Ave. NE in Austin.
