Stewie slays Hayfield

The 10th-ranked Stewartville Tigers wrestling team visited Hayfield for a Hiawatha Valley League dual Thursday night, emerging with a 55-19 victory over the host Vikings.

Hayfield won just four of the 14 matches, forfeiting three bouts and getting pinned in four others. The Tigers are polled 10th in Class AA and have won back-to-back Section 1 team championships.

The host Vikings forfeited to two of Stewartville's three ranked wrestlers, and Sam Rud fought to a 19-13 loss to fifth-ranked Cory Schmitz at 152 pounds.

Brandon Klocke (140) and George Evjen (145) had consecutive pins for two of Hayfield's four wins. Danny West won a 6-4 decision at 112, and defending state champion Shane Masching won a major decision at 125.

Both teams will be in action at the HVL conference meet Saturday. The Vikings return to regular season action at home next Tuesday in a 5 p.m. triangular with Blooming Prairie and LeCenter.
