Lydia Waalkens, 87

Lydia Waalkens, 87, formerly of the Hollandale area, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 19, 1915, to Tennis and Henderika (Sloppendal) Van Wilgen in Rock Valley, Iowa. The family moved to the Hollandale area when she was six.

On Oct. 25, 1933, she married John H. Waalkens, Jr. in rural Hollandale.

Lydia was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Moscow Lutheran Church, a former member of Hollandale Reformed Church and belonged to the circle and ELCA of Moscow Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed gardening and needlework.

Survivors include daughters, Henrietta (Maurice) Lysne, Albert Lea; Min (Paul) Westland, Albert Lea; Helen (Roger) Johnson, Albert Lea; Kath (Mike) Heffron, Maple Lake; Dawn (Tim) Horst, Howard Lake; Louis (Steph) Larson, Hayward; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; sisters, Sharon Lutes, Moundsville, W.Va.; Gert (Art) Wedel, Hollandale; Henrietta (Everett) Smith, Arkansas; sisters-in-law, Hermina Van Wilgen, Hollandale; Alice Scheffer, Lynden, Wash.; Hazel Anderson, Hollandale; brother-in-laws, Henry (Inez) Waalkens, Albert Lea; Pete Waalkens, Albert Lea.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Sal Larson; sister, Mary, and husband, Jack Loverink; and brothers, John and Tennis Van Wilgen.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 4, 2003, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Moscow Lutheran Church with Rev. LaDonna Ekern officiating.

Interment: Hollandale Cemetery.

William D. Nargan, 64

William D. Nargan, 64, of Rochester, died Jan. 31, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 3, 1938, in Austin.

On Nov. 23, 1957, he married Alice "Dutch" Berg in Binghamton, N.Y. They moved to Rochester in 1958.

William was a procurement engineer for IBM. He was a member of NRA and enjoyed woodcarving, motorcycles, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include children, Cher (Bob) Myer, Cedar; Wendy (Mark) Peterson, Rochester; John (Andrea) Nargan, Mission Viejo, Calif.; Jan (Cory) Dahlstrom, Champlin; Scott Nargan, Burnsville; eight grandchildren; mother, Marie Nargan, Austin; sister, Trudy (Bernie) O'Neill, Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 9, 2002, and one daughter.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the funeral home with Revs. Mark and Kym Johnson officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery.

Joyce Lois Schwartz, 73

Joyce Lois Schwartz, age 73, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, of Austin passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Methodist Hospital.

She was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Austin, Minn. to Carleton and Helen (Bolduan) Sayles. A graduate of Austin High School, she was married to Lawrence on June 19, 1948, at Queen of Angels Church in Austin. She devoted her life to being a loving, caring mother and wife. She will be forever missed by all.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Fogal officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and on Wednesday at St. Edwards Catholic Church one hour before the service. Organist will be Leona Miller. Soloist will be Sue Viehauser. Casket Bearers will be Jeff Daily, Brian Daily, Jennifer Tilford, Bill Tilford, Mark Schwartz, Kristine Schwartz, and Kerri Schwartz.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lawrence Schwartz of Austin; daughter, Joann Enright of Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, James Schwartz of Albert Lea, David (Denise) Schwartz of Newport, Minn., John (Jennie) Schwartz of Willmar, Minn.; grandchildren, Jeff Daily of Austin, Brian Daily of Richfield, Minn., Jennifer (Schwartz) Tilford of Rochester, Minn., Mark Schwartz of Blooming Prairie, Kristine Schwartz of Newport, Minn., Kerri Schwartz of Newport, Minn.; sister, Elaine (Leonard) Harber of Austin; brother-in-law, Charles (Roberta) Schwartz of Rose Creek; sisters-in-law, Rita (Lynn) Deremer of Austin, Muriel Sayles of Blooming Prairie; many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
