For the third year in a row, Carpenter, Iowa will be the location for the Lyle Cancer Pool Tournament. The weekend for the tournaments is Jan. 10, 11 and 12. For those that wish to be a part of this weekend, call Tanya Cook at 325-2359. The deadline to sign up for this event is Jan. 4.

Cook said, "I am co-chair with Tiny Johnson. When you call, give your name and your partner’s name. Leave your phone number too. The cost for the tournament is $25 per team. Sunday, the 12th, is for the youth and this year we have a senior’s tournament for those that are 55 and older."

Last year the pool tournament raised $17,000 for the Lyle Area Cancer Auction. This year there will be raffle with drawing for a pool table, a bar and pool cues.

The dedicated volunteers from Lyle will be out asking for donations for their auction the next three weeks. The schoolchildren of Lyle will again be selling flags that they have drawn and many will be dedicated to loved ones that have died from this dreadful disease. These flags will be on sale at area Lyle businesses for a $5 donation.

Sharon Osmundson, of Adams and a former Lyle resident, has been involved with the auction every single year. She is one of the dedicated volunteers who collects items that will be auctioned off at the cancer auction, Jan. 16, 17 and 18. Betty Fisher also has been involved since the first auction and she will be asking for donations from area businesses in Austin. Fisher's daughter is Cindy Ziegler, one of the co-chairs for the auction.

Osmundson said, "We hope to beat last year's final tally of $81,200. This fundraiser means a lot to me. I have a good friend who has cancer right now. I hope through this fundraiser that a cure can be found for this disease. I have had several relatives die of cancer. My uncle, Leonard Salisbury, was well known to people in this area and he died of cancer."

Donations will be accepted for the cancer auction for the next three weeks. Antiques, new and handcrafted items are requested. If you have a donation and need it picked up, call 325-2571 or drop it off at the Lyle Legion Hall.
