Duane R. Anderson, 72

Duane Richard Anderson, 72, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Albert Lea, to Reuben Kalester and Olive "Mildred" (Thompson) Anderson.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1948 and worked at Hormel Foods until November 1950. He served four years in the United States Air Force, three of those at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City as a chief gunner on a RB-36 flight crew.

On July 18, 1953, he married Sharon Lynne Schulz at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Faribault. They moved to Austin, where Duane worked for Hormel Foods. In 1963, he became a computer analyst where he worked until his retirement in December 1992.

He enjoyed family, golf, bowling, playing pool and cards and watching all sporting events. In his later years, he enjoyed watching the Animal Planet network and riding bicycle.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1216, American Legion Post 91 and the Elks Club where he had served as Exalted Ruler and secretary.

Survivors include wife, Sharon Anderson, Austin; children, Terri Anderson, St. Paul; Vicki (Wayne) Krueger, Byron; Randy (Mary) Anderson, Bricelyn; Scott Anderson, Austin; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Jones, Austin; brothers, Paul Anderson, San Diego, Calif.; David Anderson, San Lorenzo, Calif.; Charles (Joyce) Anderson and Richard (Jeanne) Anderson, all of Austin; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Gary Anderson and one in infancy.

Visitation: One hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

Service: 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Roberta Flood officiating.

Interment: At a later date in Grandview Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91.

Steven R. Morgan, 52

Steven R. Morgan, 52, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at his home.

He was born March 6, 1950, in Austin, to Robert L. and Delores I. (Iverson) Morgan.

He was a life-long resident of Austin and worked as a registered nurse in the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

On July 24, 1971, he married Mary E. Musser in Mankato.

Steven was a member of Crane Community Chapel, the Eagles, American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216 all of Austin.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Morgan, Austin; daughter, Terra Morgan and son, Jesse Morgan, both of Austin; two grandchildren; brother, Greg (Janice) Morgan, Danube; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and sister, Nancy Mens.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the funeral home and Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Crane Community Chapel with Rev. Randy Peterson officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

George T. Knutson, 80

George T. Knutson, 80, of Roseville, formerly of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.

He was born July 12, 1922, in Rake Iowa, to Charles and Altha Knutson.

He farmed and worked for over 30 years at Wilson Foods in Albert Lea. A World War II veteran, George served in Co. B 130th infantry division U.S. Army, saw action in the Pacific theater, following the war was in the army of occupation in Germany, where he took down the last American Flag at the completion of the occupation. George also served as a Presidential Guard for President Harry S. Truman.

On July 28, 1977, he married Margaret Maschka in Austin.

George was a life member of the VFW and member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Albert Lea.

Survivors include wife, Margaret Knutson, Roseville; daughter, Soraya (David) Cornick, Albert Lea; six stepchildren, Jerry (Kathleen) Maschka, Mankato; Beverly (Jack) Bell, Chanhassen; Denny (Linda) Maschka, Austin; Dean (Karen) Maschka, Roseville; Steve (Cindy) Maschka, Austin; Robert Maschka (Glen Ernst), Roseville; four grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; four great-step-grandchildren; brother, Mervin Knutson, Rake, Iowa; sisters, Lorene Geiselhart, Callmar, Iowa; Lucille (Jerry) Barnett, West Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur, Lloyd and Chester Knutson.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 16, 2002, and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Father William Becker officiating.

Interment: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea with military honors by VFW Post 477 and American Legion Post 56 of Albert Lea.

Wilbur Jennings, 86

Wilbur Jennings, 86, of Austin, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at his son's home in Rochester.

He was born Aug. 7, 1916, in rural Grand Meadow. He graduated from Grand Meadow School in 1934.

As a young man he sheared sheep in the Grand Meadow area, operated a trap line on the Rainey River and worked in the Fire Camps of northern Minnesota.

On Aug. 9, 1940, he married Edna Armbrust at the Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin.

In 1941, Wilbur established Jennings Scrap Yard in Spring Valley.

He served in the US Navy during World War II, with his tour of duty in the South Pacific.

In 1965, he opened Rochester Iron & Metal with his son, Gene.

In 1978, he opened the Dan Jennings Co in Austin with his son, Daniel.

Edna died May 31, 1998.

Survivors include sons, Gene (Karen), Rochester; Daniel, Austin; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Charlotte (Cliff) Keller, Austin; Juanita Pepper, Federal Way, Wash.; Eileen Lindal, Tualatin, Ore.; brothers, Don (Edith), El Cajon, Calif.; Roger (Margaret), Austin; Raymond (Ruth), Benson, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Service: A private family service will be held.

Arnold F. Barta, 64

Arnold F. Barta, 64, of Medford Lakes, N.J., formerly of Austin, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in Mount Holly, N.J.

He was born Sept. 19, 1938, in Austin, to Joseph and Anna (Svejkovsky) Barta. He graduated from the Austin area schools.

He was a retired US Navy Commander and was most recently an engineer at Lockheed Martin Moorestown.

Survivors include cousins in the Austin area.

He was preceded in death by his brother and his parents.

Visitation: One hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the funeral home with Father Paul Nelson officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post #91.
